Robotics has increasingly become accepted in the past 20 years as a viable solution to many applications in surgery, particularly in the field of Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS)Taylor & Stoianovici (2003). Minimally Invasive Surgery represents the future of many types of medical interventions such as keyhole neurosurgery or transluminal endoscopic surgery. These procedures involve insertion of surgical instruments such as needles and endoscopes into human body through small incision/ body cavity for biopsy and drug delivery. However, nearly all surgical instruments for these procedures are inserted manually and they are lack of dexterity in small constrained spaces. As a consequence, there is a long learning curve for surgeons to use them properly and thus risks for patients. Many research efforts have been made to improve the functionalities of current instruments by designing active instruments (endoscope, needles) using robotic mechanisms during the last decades, such as snake robot for throat surgery Simaan et al. (2004) or active cannula Webster et al. (2009). Studies are currently underway to evaluate the value of these new devices. Usually these robots are micro size and very flexible so that they can pass the constrained space for fine manipulations. Furthermore, how to steer these robots into targets safely during the insertion usually needs additional sensors, such as MRI imaging and US imaging, and path planning algorithms are also needed to be developed for the intervention.

Description :
The idea of a piezoelectric transformer (PT) was first implemented by Rosen (Rosen, 1956), as shown in Fig.1. It used the coupling effect between electrical and mechanical energy of piezoelectric materials. A sinusoidal signal is used to excite mechanical vibrations by the inverse piezoelectric effect via the driver section. An output voltage can be induced in the generator part due to the direct piezoelectric effect. The PT offers many advantages over the conventional electromagnetic transformer such as high power-to-volume ratio, electromagnetic field immunity, and nonflammable.

Climbing robots work in a special vertical environment and use mobility against gravity (Zhang, 2007). They are a special potential sub-group of mobile technology. In the recent 15 years, there have been considerable achievements in climbing robot research worldwide by exploring potential applications in hazardous and unmanned environments (Virk, 2005). The typical application of climbing robots includes reliable non-destructive evaluation and diagnosis in the nuclear industry, the chemical industry and the power generation industry (Longo, et al., 2004), welding and manipulation in the construction industry (Armada, et al., 1998), cleaning and maintenance for high-rise buildings in the service industry (Elkmann, et al., 2002) and urban search and rescue in military and civil applications (Wu, et al., 2006). However, until now, there are few successful prototypes that are both small enough and move flexibly enough to negotiate surfaces with a complex structure. It is common to design rather big and heavy climbing robots. The difficulties of developing a flexible and small climbing robot with full locomotion capabilities include not only the weight reduction of the mechanism but also the miniaturization of the flexible construction. An additional problem is the fact that the intelligent technology in many climbing robotic prototypes is not developed enough.

Recent advances in micro- and nanofabrication technologies have enabled the development of miniaturized accelerometers, gyroscopes, μTAS chips, etc. These microdevices are made of substrates having thicknesses relatively greater (~100μm) than the feature scale of the microfabricated components (1~10 μm, Fig.1a). Conversely, the microscale organelles or tissues of natural creatures are made of substrates, or membranes, that are relatively thin compared to their feature size. For example, a human blood capillary, which is 10~100 μm in diameter, has vessel walls with thicknesses of ~1 μm. To give another example, a cell with a diameter of ~10 μm is composed of lipid bilayer membranes with thicknesses of ~10 nm. This fundamental characteristic of the architecture of biological microstructures, which is totally different from that of artificial microdevices, makes life a highly adaptable system from both chemical and physical perspectives. The small thickness of the membrane enhances transport of heat and substances between the body and its surroundings, and it provides softness to the body, enabling passive and active morphological changes for adapting to the environment.

The main drawback with parallel robots is the relatively small workspace.
