Determination of flow surface profile in contraction allowing no gradual hydraulic drop in perfection. Where Q= 100cfs,  yu/s=5ft  and other details are given in fig below.

Solution:

As E is Constant.
E= y + V2/2g
E = y + Q2/A22g

So, At Upstream (u/s):
E = 5 + 1002/ (b2 × y2 ×2 × 32.2)
E = 5 + 1002/ (102 × 52 ×64.4 )
E=5.06’

At downstream (d/s):
E = yd/s + Q2/ (b2 × yd/s 2 × 2g)
5.06 = yd/s + 1002/ (82 × yd/s 2 × 64.4)
yd/s = 4.96’ &;   0 .75’

Where; Y= 2/3 × E
         =2 × 5.06/3
         = 3.37’

& Slope  = (10-8) / 50  = 0.04
