Review
By A.M. Strauss, Vanderbilt University
This CD-ROM contains the complete text of the 10th edition of the printed handbook…The disc also has some updated material on the environment, steel, friction, fluid film bearings, gears, air-conditioning, vibrations, robotics, composite materials, and pumps. The installation of the disc proceeded very efficiently…and was completed in a few minutes…One can magnify the text and figures by positive zooming…There is also an icon for many equations, which, when clicked, opens up a Mathcad window where calculations can be performed. A useful feature is the Adobe Acrobat Find feature for searching the entire handbook…Useful for graduate students faculty, researchers and professionals.

The widely used reference first published in 1916 and most recently in 1987 here contains new and rewritten entries on gearing, autofacturing, HVAC, displacement pumps, vibration, computers, robotics, optics, ferrous and nonferrous materials, composites, fluid film bearings, gas turbines, incineration, industrial plants, and patents and trademarks. Arranged in such sections as mathematics, heat, strength of materials, machine elements, building construction and equipment, and power generation. The index is very detailed. Includes many diagrams, drawings, graphs, and charts, but on bibliography.
