The Effect of Surcharge Loading Adjacent to Piles

The objective of this report is to present an approach to designing pile foundations, embedded at depth in a stiff substratum and influenced by adjacent loads applied on the surface of soft superficial soils. The effect of lateral thrust on the piles in an upper soft clay layer due to simulated embankment construction is examined, and soil-pile interaction mechanisms are identified herein for behaviour both at working load and at ultimate lateral capacity. A combination of centrifuge model testing and three dimensional finite element analysis was used to investigate the performance of a row of free headed piles and of a pile group, for different pile and foundation geometries, in terms of changes of bending moment, deflection and lateral pressure due to a uniform surcharge. An approximate formula for lateral thrust in the soft clay layer is developed, based on the differential movement between the piles and the surrounding soil, which accounts for pile spacing, relative pile-soil stiffness and the degree of soil strength mobilisation. This loading function has been incorporated in a computer program, SIMPLE, which calculates the pile bending moment and deflection profiles for long piles and pile groups. The algorithm has been calibrated against the experimental and numerical results, and design charts are produced for the free headed pile case. A design procedure is recommended, and illustrated by a worked example, for piled full-height bridge abutments and other facilities which feature passive lateral loading of piles by a nearby surcharge. The work described in this report was carried out under contract by Cambridge University for the Transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL).

Vibroreplecement Design Priebe Method

Vibro Replacement is an accepted method for subsoil improvement, at which large-sized columns of coarse backfill material are installed in the soil by means of special depth vibrators. The performance of this composite system consisting of stone columns and soil, is not determinable by simple investigation methods like soundings, and therefore, such methods are not suitable for design purposes. However, theoretically, the efficiency of Vibro Replacement can be reliably evaluated. The method elaborated on a theoretical basis and described in this contribution, is easy to survey and adaptable to different conditions due to the separate consideration of significant parameters. Practically, it comprises design criteria for all frequently occurring applications.

The Canadian System of Soil Classification

This revised publication replaces "The Canadian System of Soil Classification" (second edition) published in 1987. The changes incorporated in this current publication are based on the work of the Soil Classification Working Group (SCWG) formerly of the ExpertCommittee on Soil Survey, and continued by the Land Resource Division of the former Centre for Land and Biological Resources Research. Current taxonomic activities are part of the Land Resources Program of the Eastern Cereal and Oilseed Research Centre, Ottawa, Ontario. Highlights of the third edition include: a tenth order, Vertisolic, which has been added; subgroups intergrading to the Vertisolic Order have been added in the Chernozemic, Gleysolic, Luvisolic, and Solonetzic Orders; major revisions have been carried out to the Cryosolic Order; and, a complete key to soil classification has been added in chapter 3.

Technical Manual for Strata

Author: Albert R. Kottke and Ellen M. Rathje (University of Texas, Austin) | Size: 3.97 MB | Format: PDF | Publisher: PEER | Year: 2008 | pages: 100

This report investigates and explains the theories and technical details behind "Strata" . It should be noted that the computer program "Strata" performs equivalent-linear site response analysis in the frequency domain using time domain input motions or random vibration theory (RVT) methods, and allows for randomization of the site properties.

Surface and Underground Excavations: Methods, Techniques and Equipment

This comprehensive text explores the technologies and developments in excavations for any type of surface or undergroundexcavation. The first several chapters cover unit operations, including drillingexplosives and blasting, mucking, haulage, hoisting, and supports and reinforcement. The book then describes excavation techniques for various operations, such as tunneling, raising, sinking, drifting, stoping, quarrying and surface mining, underground mining, pillar blasting, and liquidation. It also examines the design, planning, and analysis of excavations as well as the construction of surface and subsurface excavations, such as caverns.Case studies focus on heavy underground blasting during pillar recoveries.

Support of Underground Excavations in Hard Rock

The safe and economical construction of tunnels, mines, and other subterranean works depends on the correct choice of support systems to ensure that the excavations are stable. These support systems should be matched to the characterstics of the rock mass and the excavation techniques adopted. Establishing the support requirements, designing support systems and installing these correctly are essential elements in safe underground construction. This is a comprehensive and practical work which also gives access to user-friendly computer programmes which enable the investigation and design of support techniques. Details on how to obtain this software are also included in the book.

Structural Foundations Manual for Low-Rise Buildings

This book provides practical and buildable solutions for the design of foundations for housing and other low-rise buildings, especiallythose on abnormal or poor ground. A wealth of expert information and advice is brought together dealing with the key aspects a designer must consider in order to achieve effective and economic foundation designs. This second edition of Structural FoundationsManual for Low-Rise Buildings has been completely updated in line with the new government guidelines on contaminated land and brown-field sites.

The book includes well-detailed design solutions and calculations, actual case histories, illustrations, design charts and check lists, making it a user-friendly reference for contractors, structural engineers, architects and students who have to deal with foundations for low-rise buildings on sites with difficult ground conditions.

Structural Foundation Designers' Manual

This manual for civil and structural engineers aims to simplify as much as possible a complex subject which is often treated too theoretically, by explaining in a practical way how to provide uncomplicated, buildable and economical foundations.

It explains simply, clearly and with numerous worked examples how economic foundation design is achieved. It deals with both straightforward and difficult sites, following the process through site investigation, foundation selection and, finally, design.

The book:
  • includes chapters on many aspects of foundation engineering that most other books avoid including
    • filled and contaminated sites
    • mining and other man-made conditions
  • features a step-by-step procedure for the design of lightweight and flexible rafts, to fill the gap in guidance in this much neglected, yet extremely economical foundation solution
  • concentrates on foundations for building structures rather than the larger civil engineering foundations
  • includes many innovative and economic solutions developed and used by the authors’ practice but not often covered in other publications
  • provides an extensive series of appendices as a valuable reference source.
For the Second Edition the chapter on contaminated and derelict sites has been updated to take account of the latest guidelines on the subject, including BS 10175. Elsewhere, throughout the book, references have been updated to take account of the latest technical publications and relevant British Standards.

Strength Analysis in Geomechanics (Foundations of Engineering Mechanics)

This book presents a new approach for the solution of geomechanical problems - it explicitly takes into account deformation and fractures of soils in explicitly, which are neglected in classical methods although these properties create important effects. The method reveals the influence of the form of a structure on its ultimate state. It considers the rheological law which accounts for large strains, and a non-linear unsteady creep, an influence of a stress state type, an initial anisotropy, and damages is introduced. The whole approach takes into account five types of non-linearity (physical as well as geometrical ones) and contains several new ideas. For example, the fracture is considered as a process, and the difference between the body and an element of the material is taken into account which only deforms and fails because it is in the structure. In addition, the simplicity of some non-linear computations against the consequently linear ones is featured.
